Antonio Barrea (b 1948 - d1 990)
Landscapes and representations of nature have occupied a central position in Colombia’s artistic tradition since colonial times. This has been the case particularly because of two scientific endeavors that established biodiversity as a specific feature of Colombian territory in the national imaginary: the Botanical Expedition (1732-1808) and the Chorographic Commission (1850-1859). The work of Antonio Barrera is part of that long tradition in which landscape constitutes a topos of the narratives of identity in the visual culture of Colombia.
In the eighties, his work referenced Colombian landscapes with a nostalgic view; the artist himself said on several occasions that he considered himself a neoromantic. In his later works, he abandoned the synthesis present in previous years, but continued his chromatic and atmospheric explorations. His work can be found mostly in public and private collections in Colombia and France.
